Bernice

Mike went to visit a new family in the area and they had just purchased an adorable puppy. Bad news here because he came home and began his research on the Bernese Mountain Dog. He was quite certain that he would be purchasing one of these beautiful dogs within the week.

Then the voice of reason spoke (that's me). Now really isn't the best time. I am a dog lover, always have been, but I have one child who is being potty trained and the other in diapers. I'm not really in the mood to train something else right now. So we came up with a good compromise.
Here it is. Our savings jar. Charlie and Jane will be helping to save for our new puppy. Her name is Bernice. We are going to call her Bernie. She isn't alive yet but someday she will be born and look like this. Then she will grow up and look like this.
Mike is pretty excited. He's been asked not to go to the bank and take out a lot of coins to fill the jar. We'll see how well he can keep up his end of the bargain. Charlie has already opted to save for the puppy than put some of his coins in a candy machine. This will be good for all of us. We'll keep you posted on our progress.

I knew as soon as I read "bernice" that you were talking about a dog! the puppy is darling, but I'm with you... I've got too many living things to potty train without throwing something hairy in the mix! good luck!

DON'T DO IT. Dogs have puppies.
This is a serious warning.
Don't take it lightly!!

Good luck! It cracks me up that Mike was asked not to go to the bank to get lots of coins to fill the jar!

do you realize, or should I say does mike realize the gianormous size that bernies POOP will be, it will be all over your back yard and you'll have to scoop every time youre kids want to go out and play, you better get a good solid commitment now from Mike that he will be the scooper!! Dog are fun though.

Dogs poop! do you really want one??? :) i am just bitter right now because a dog in our neighborhood likes to use my lawn as a toilet and now that the snow is melting several people have tracked it into my house and I havent been happy about that. :( no fun to clean up but if the dog stayed a little cute puppy that would be a different story.

I love these kind of dogs! We have a big, hairy dog (an Akita) right now and even though it's a pain sometimes it's so worth it. I just saw Marly & Me so I'm feeling extra sentimental. Here's the closing lines from the movie: "A dog doesn't care if you're rich or poor, clever or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can make you feel that extraordinary?"

I second the bigger jar comment. Josh has been helping with the K9 unit at work and now has his sights set on becoming one himself. HELP!!!

Wahoo! That is the next dog on my and Cody's list too! (Like we don't already have enough canines in our lives) They are amazingly sweet and So smart! You need to get one of the carts for her so she can pull the kids.

what a great idea for mike and your kids!!! but i agree with nancy on a bigger jar or even 2 or 3, although when you do get your bernie, i will love coming to visit!

Wow what a big dog! Good luck in your saving endeavor. How long do you think it will take to save enough?

Wow! You are a brave mama. The kids (and their Dad) will love having a dog, but I hope you won't regret it. Eric has been begging for a dog for about a year now, but my city-born, apartment-raised husband is not too keen on the idea (hard to imagine, I know)! Definitely keep us posted on the Bernie jar!

That is one cute puppy, but one huge dog. My brother in law's dog just had 10 lab puppies, and my kids think we are bringing one home. But, I'm with you - I'm not ready for another "child" to take care of in our house just yet.

Do you still have Budda?

The Shedding for all that pretty hair has got to be tremendous.

Have you thought of becoming foster parents for rescued dogs waiting for homes. You could request only having a certain breed and try a big dog out.

ARE YOU NUTS!?! Puppies are cute but big dogs are a pain in the #&*!
Maybe if you were through having kids and Charlie was big enough to help. --- Nah, I wouldn't do it even then. The dogs still keep living after your kids leave, you know. And they never outgrow poop.

Is that a dog or a bear? Goooooood luck with that! I'm with whoever commented that Mike needs to be the official pooper-scooper-upper. Get it in writing! :) On a more positive note, that DOES look like a fun dog. Oh the stories you'll have to blog about after Bernie enters your lives.

Uh, yikes--that is a BIG dog (with big poop and lots of hair). On the bright side--big, cuddle-y, soft.

Good luck!

Halle wants to know if she can come live with you and "your" dog. Her Mom said, "No, I too have too many things to potty train." So when you get the dog I'll send Halle! (She's mostly pottie trained!)
